Personal Project “Into the Surreal”

Image
Artist statement:  My photography focuses on portraits of people whose facial features are digitally distorted in surreal ways. By stretching, blurring, or reshaping parts of the face, I aim to challenge the idea that identity is fixed or easily understood. The distortions represent how people are often seen through expectations, stereotypes, or personal insecurities rather than for who they truly are. I am inspired by Dana Scruggs’ bold portrait work and her focus on Black identity and presence. Like Scruggs, I want my images to feel powerful and intentional, even when they are uncomfortable to look at. The altered faces in my photographs push viewers to slow down and question what they are seeing, encouraging them to think beyond surface-level appearances. Through this work, I hope to create conversations about identity, perception, and self-image. My photographs are not meant to hide the subject but to reveal deeper emotions and experiences that are often overlooked.
